ICYMI (In case you missed it): Lessons You Love to Hate Recap
If you couldn’t make Lisha Barnes’s Lessons You Love to Hate webinar, don’t worry. We’re here to provide you with some highlights from the incredible session.
Lisha discussed some important topics, including building a powerful presentation, lesson plan components, scheduling, and creating a lesson, so the subjects you don’t enjoy teaching as much become easier to take on. With that in mind, Lisha explained the 4 Ps of a Powerful Presentation which is as follows:
Within each one of those Ps, Lisha dives deeper into more context around knowing your audience, going in with a positive mindset, and making sure students understand the theory and importance behind a topic so they can comprehend the impact it can have in their career.
Next up is lesson plan building! From learning objectives to motivations, activities, and ending with an evaluation, the more you plan out a lesson, the smoother teaching it will be.
Once you have identified the lesson’s key points of discussion, either from your school’s focus areas or the Milady instructor resources, you must schedule how to break it all down in a timely manner to fit everything. For example, 1 week to cover a specific topic, 5 hours of material, 1 hour a day to focus on each key point of discussion, which could break down to 4 days of theory and 1 day for testing.
From there, you’re ready to build out an engaging lesson plan that captivates your audience’s attention, delivers all the meaningful content, and demonstrates why this information is crucial to retain.
After that, it all comes down to your delivery. From the time you walk through that door, you must be on time, prepared, and energetically ready to engage your students in the lesson. Be that good example, power through those hard to teach topics, and strive to be the best educator you can be.
