Welcome to September! Let’s look at the national days we might want to celebrate in our school.
September 1 – National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day. This day celebrates words that don’t rhyme with any other word. They are called refractory rhymes. Unrhymable words include orange, month, silver, spirit, purple and ninth. Challenge your students to see if the subject you are currently studying has any refractory rhymes.
September 4 – National College Color Day. Give your normal dress code a break and have everyone show up in their favorite college colors. I’ll be sporting some Texas Tech red and black!
September 4 – National Food Bank Day. Offer a special promotion in your school for food donations for your local food bank. Check with your food bank and see what kinds of food items they need, then offer a 10% discount to clients when they bring in items on the food bank’s list.
September 5 – National Tailgating Day or National Cheese Pizza Day. Celebrate the Saturday before Labor Day with a cookout or pizza day.
September 5 – World Beard Day.
September 6 – National Read a Book Day. We all are usually so busy with work and life that often reading for pleasure gets eliminated from our lives. Take today and put it back into your schedule. Pick up a book and read. Create a list of industry-related books or business books for your students and challenge them to pick one a read it. You might even consider having them share what they learned with the class.
September 7 – Labor Day. Today we celebrate Labor Day and the end of summer. It is a weekend for those final summer vacations, parties and parades. But it is more than a day to party, it is a day that pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Today we celebrate you, the American worker. As you head to your parties and parades and vacations, remember that you are an integral part of that great American workforce. Not only do you work hard, you work to help create the next generation of workers!
September 14 – National Live Creative Day. This is the day to let the world see the creativity of your students. Give students an assignment asking them to display their creativity. Take final photos and post them to the school’s social media pages.
September 15 – National Online Learning Day. This day honors the accomplishments of online students. This year, we have something extra to celebrate this day. Thanks to online learning, many of us were able to remain open and working during the last five months. Take a minute today to recognize what really worked for you, your school and your students during your online learning experience.
September 18 – U.S. Air Force Birthday. If you live in town with an Air Force base, help wish them a happy birthday by inviting all Air Force personnel into your student salons for a discounted service.
September 19 – National Cleanup Day. Celebrate National Cleanup Day by organizing a full day for school cleanup. Have students clean and organize their kit and station. Get that dispensary and stockroom organized. And don’t forget, make sure to clean your office and classroom as well.
September 19 – National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Ahoy, matey! Bring some fun to the school today and have everyone practice their best pirate talk! Arr!
September 25 – National One-Hit Wonder Day. Make a playlist of all your favorite one-hit wonders and play the songs throughout the day. Just do a quick Google search for a list of the top one-hit wonders.
September 25 – National Comic Book Day. Have each student pick out their favorite comic book character and have a contest for which student can best re-create the look, including hair and makeup.
